These individuals are black because they carry mutations in genes involved in melanin metabolism . This variation will probably give some selective advantage to individuals living in areas with dense forest density, very low light levels. It is not a separate species as there is no mating isolation from other groups. In a litter of a pair of leopards, normal parents can produce mutant carriers and non-carriers.
