Poliwhirl is a pure Water-type Pokémon from the Kanto region and the second stage of the Poliwag evolutionary line. While it can live on land, it prefers to stay in the water where its smooth, slimy skin remains moist. Its most distinguishing feature is the black-and-white spiral on its belly, which is actually its internal organs showing through its thin skin. This spiral has a hypnotic effect, causing anyone who stares at it to become drowsy.
