Ace adalah kapten Tim 2 Bajak Laut Shirohige dan mantan kapten Bajak Laut Spade, ia memakan buah Mera Mera no Mi untuk menjadi pengguna kemampuan berubah menjadi api serta menciptakan dan mengendalikan api.
Ayahnya adalah raja bajak laut Gol D. Roger, ibunya adalah Portgas D. Rouge (keduanya sudah meninggal). Ia diadopsi oleh Monkey D. Garp melalui surat wasiat Roger sebelum ia lahir.
