Byōdō-in (平等院 (Equal Institute)?) is a Buddhist temple in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. This temple was built in 998 during the Heian period, used as a residence of Fujiwara no Michinaga, one of the most powerful people of the Fujiwara family. In 1052 Fujiwara no Yorimichi took this residence and established a Buddhist temple.
The most famous building in the temple is the Amitabha Palace commonly known as Hōō-dō (鳳凰堂, Sino-Vietnamese: phoenix street) built in 1053.
