The Great Sphinx of Giza ( Arabic : أبو الهول Abū al Hūl , English : Great Sphinx of Giza ), commonly known as the Sphinx , is a limestone statue of a sphinx . Monk (a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a man) in prostrate lying on the Giza plateau, on the left bank of the Nile at Giza , Egypt .
It is the largest monolithic statue in the world, 73.5 meters (241 ft) long and 20.22 m (66.34 ft) high and one of the oldest monolithic sculptures. The statue is believed to have been built by the ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom period , during the reign of the pharaoh Khafra (2558-2532 BC ).
