The reason Goku barely used this form was due to suffering the same weakness all low-class and half-breed Saiyans suffered: turning into a Great Ape also turned him into a mindless destructive monster with no recollection of what happened. Goku regained the power to turn into a Great Ape in Dragon Ball: GT when Old Kai regrew his tail for him, though this was only because Goku was losing against Baby and wished to experiment by combining the Super Saiyan and Great Ape forms together. After gaining Golden Great Ape and subsequently Super Saiyan 4, Goku never utilised this form again.
