SMS Lützow was the second Derfflinger - class battlecruiser of the Imperial German Navy built just before the outbreak of World War I. Ordered to replace the guard cruiser Kaiserin Augusta , Lützow was launched on 29 November 1913 , but completed only in 1916 . As a sister ship of Derfflinger , Lützow slightly different due to the addition of a pair of 15 cm (5.9 in) secondary guns and the addition of a watertight compartment in the hull. It is named after the Prussian general Ludwig Adolf Wilhelm von Lützow , who took part in the Napoleonic Wars .
