Its official name is RMS Titanic (RMS stands for Royal Mail Ship ). Ship construction began in 1909 and was launched in 1912 . As the largest, most modern, splendid and luxurious ship at the time, the Titanic carried the ambition to dominate the transatlantic sea route of its owner, the shipping company The White Star Line .
