Après avoir embauché un consultant pour l'aider à déterminer un site approprié pour son projet, Disney a acheté une propriété de 160 acres près d'Anaheim en 1953. La construction a commencé en 1954 et le parc a été annoncé lors d'un événement de presse télévisé spécial sur la télévision ABC le 17 juillet 1955.
