The new species belongs to a completely different family of carnivorous dinosaurs, the Carcharodontosaurids, and it became extinct millions of years before the T-rex appeared on Earth. This means that Meraxes gigas evolved independently, suggesting that giant predators with two very small forelimbs offer more advantages than scientists once thought.
"I believe those tiny arms had some function. Dinosaurs may have used them to reproduce by holding females during mating, or assisting them to get up after sleeping. or fall," said paleontologist Juan Canale at the National University of Río Negro in Argentina, lead author of the study.
