The Mi-17 (also known as the Mi-8MT in Russia , NATO reporting name "Hip" ) is a Soviet helicopter currently produced at two factories in Kazan and Ulan-Ude . The Mi-17 is a medium-sized twin-engine transport helicopter that can also be equipped with additional weapons to become a heavy armed helicopter . The Soviet military previously designed the Mi-17 for the Soviet war in Afghanistan

The Mi-17 was developed from the basic airframe of the Mi-8, featuring the Mi-14's larger engines, propellers, and transmissions, along with improvements to the fuselage for heavy loads. Using the motor for "hot and high" conditions is the kW 1545 (2070 shp) Isotov TV3-117VM. The version recently exported to China and Venezuela for use in the high mountains uses the VK-2500 engine with FADEC control system.
